LIFE Counseling - Mr. Tim Hayes

LIFE- Leading Individuals, Fostering Empowerment

The purpose of the LIFE Counselor is to allow students to be as successful as they can, by fostering resiliency and addressing issues which may interfere with a student's educational success. The program provides counseling and preventative services as well as services to youth already experiencing difficulty related to anger management, aggression, stress, anxiety, family stressors, depression, relationship issues, conflicts with peers, tobacco use, or drug and alcohol abuse (either theirs or that of friends and/or family members).  Individual and group support is offered to include life skills, developing healthy relationships, stress management, conflict resolution skills, changing families, anger management, drug and alcohol prevention and in some cases intervention with tobacco, alcohol, or substance abuse.  Students enter the program either by a self-referral or by the referral from a family member, concerned peer, or school personnel.  Each referral is handled in confidence to assure privacy of both the student and the person making the referral.

Meet your LIFE Counselor:

Mr. Hayes has been a counselor with at-risk youth and families since 1994 in a variety of settings including residential treatment, therapeutic foster care, and intensive in home services prior to coming to Roanoke County Schools as a (SAP) Student Assistance Program Coordinator in 2005 and later LIFE Counselor from 2018 to the present.  Mr. Hayes received his BA in Psychology from Roanoke College in 1993 and Masters in Social Work from Radford University in 2002. Mr. Hayes receives referrals for students from a variety of sources including students, faculty, parents, court system, and other community resources.

  • It is appropriate to refer to LIFE Counseling for issues pertaining to stress-management, anger management, family stressors, relationships, bullying, and substance abuse both personal and when dealing with family members that struggle with substance abuse. Other appropriate referral topics include: self-esteem, conflict resolution skills, and anxiety.

  • Participation in LIFE requires consent by both the student and their parent/guardian, although permission is not required for serious spontaneous concerns and crisis intervention.
